Body Iron Loss in Animals

Abstract
The decrease in specific activity of radioiron in circulating red cells of 8 animal species [monkey, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, dog, sheep and cow] was measured. From these data body Fe turnover was calculated and a general inverse relationship between body size and rate of external Fe exchange was established. A comparison of Fe requirements and Fe intake in these animals indicate extremely low absorption requirements, ranging 0.2-2.3% of their dietary Fe intake.
