Quantitative participation of fatty acid and glucose substrates in oxidative metabolism of excised rat diaphragm

Abstract
The conversion of l-Cl4-octanoate, l-Cl4-butyrate and glucose-U-Cl4 to C14O2 by rat diaphragm was studied. From the data obtained, the conelusion is that added fatty acid substrates participate extensively in rat diaphragm metabolism in vitro. Added glucose participates to a lesser extent, but the possibility of intracellular dilution does not permit exact quantitative measurement. Additional evidence is presented which indicates that the ketone body [beta]-hydroxybutyrate is utilized by rat diaphragm muscle, but to an undetermined extent.
