Stability of airways during reflex bronchoconstriction.

Abstract
The effect of reflex bronchoconstriction on distensibility of pulmonary airways was studied in cats, using pulmonary resistance (RL) as an index of constriction and the relation between anatomic dead space (VD) and transpulmonary pressure at end inspiration (Pst(1)) as an index of airway compliance (CA). CA decreased with the reflex bronchoconstriction produced by irritation of the larynx (increased RL ) and CA increased with release of constrictor tone by vagotomy (decreased RL).
