Relation between Polarity of Substrate Surface and Liquid Crystal Molecular Orientation

Abstract
A new method to measure the polarity of the substrate surface by applying the principle of chromatography is proposed. By using this method, the relation between the liquid crystal molecular orientation and the polarity of the substrate surface is made clear. That is, liquid crystals with amphiphilic impurities align perpendicular to the strong polar surfaces such as In2O3 or Al2O3.
