Abstract
A method has been described whereby urine extracts containing steroid conjugates can be chromatographed on neutral alumina. 17-Oxo steroids conjugated as sulfates have been separated from those conjugated as glucuronides; determinations carried out on the fractions so obtained agree with values for these conjugates by alternative methods. 17-Oxogenic steroid glucuronides (Norymberski, 1952) are also recovered quantitatively from the column and neither these nor the 17-oxo steroid conjugates appears to have been modified during adsorption. The procedure provides a rapid method for the determination of 17-oxo steroid sulfate/glucuronide ratios and forms the basis of a method for the partial purification of steroid glucuronides. Attempts to isolate individual conjugates by gradient elution on these columns have not been successful. Keywords
