Abstract
In 4 patients the in-vivo metabolism of C19-steroids in the wall of the small intestines has been investigated. During resorption from the lumen 79.5% of free androstendione and androstenolone were conjugated by the intestinal wall and 14% metabolised. Conjugated 3[beta]-hydroxysteroids were exclusively isolated from the fraction of steroid sulfates or sulfatides, while 3[alpha]-hydroxysteroids were mainly conjugated with glucuronic acid. Androstenolone sulfate passed through the intestinal wall almost without reconjugation or metabolism of the steroid. When free [7[alpha]-3H]androstenolone was injected into the upper mesenteric artery 5.6% of the applied radioactivity were conjugated with sulfuric acid and 0.7% with glucuronic acid upon a single passing by the intestinal wall. Similarly, 72.9% of androstenolone sulfate injected into the upper mesenteric artery were converted into the corresponding sulfatide.
