Hyperon Production in Interactions of 2.7-GeV/cAntiprotons on Protons

Abstract
We have measured the cross sections for hyperon production in 2.7-GeV/c p¯p interactions. The values obtained are: σ(Λ¯Λ)=113±15 μb, σ(Σ¯0Λ)+σ(Λ¯Σ0)=66±13 μb, σ(Σ¯0Σ0)<15 μb, σ(Ξ¯0Ξ0)=2.8 μb(90% confidence) σ(Σ¯Σ+)=30.7±9.4 μb, σ(Σ¯+Σ)=1.0±5.4 μb (largeerrorresultingfromsubtraction), σ(Ξ¯+Ξ)=1.8 μb (90% confidence), σ(Λ¯Λπ0)=65±25 μb, σ(Σ¯Λπ++c.c.)=25.9±10.1 μb, σ(Σ¯Σ0π++c.c.)=2.9±2.9 μb (oneevent), σ(Σ¯+Λπ+c.c.)=6.6±3.9 μb, σ(Σ¯+Σ0π+c.c.)=3.7±2.6 μb, σ(Σ¯Σ+π0)=3.6 μb (90% confidence), σ(Λ¯Λπ+π)=3±2 μb, and σ(ΛK+p¯)=2.3±2.3 μb (one event). The ratios of the cross sections for the two-body final states have been compared with predictions of SU3 and are in good agreement with the process being dominated by the exchange of an antisymmetric octet in the t channel. The angular distributions of Λ¯Λ, Σ¯Σ+, and Λ¯Λπ0 final states clearly show the peripheral nature of these interactions. The differential cross section data for the interaction p¯pΛ¯Λ have been compared with parametric equations and three absorption models. Good fits to the data have been achieved with each of these equations or models.
