Fluctuation-Induced First-Order Phase Transitions Studied by the Monte Carlo Technique

Abstract
The critical behavior of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet described by a six-dimensional order parameter has been investigated by the Monte Carlo technique. A first-order phase transition is observed. This result is in agreement with the prediction of renormalization-group calculations in 4ε dimensions and with neutron scattering experiments on UO2, but in contrast to the mean-field theory, which leads to a second-order phase transition.
