Physical Methods Applied to the Study of Visual Perception

Abstract

The study of visual perception is rightly regarded as primarily the concern of the physiologist yet the work described below may reasonably be classed as applied physics for two reasons. Firstly the experimental methods are clearly applications of physics and secondly the interpretation of the results is by analogy with physical control systems such as servo-mechanisms. To the physicist, the eye is equivalent to an optical system which forms an image of the external scene upon a mosaic of receptors.
