MICROBIOLOGICAL DEGRADATION OF BILE ACIDS

Abstract
The following synthetic steps are described: cholic acid [forward arrow] 3-keto-4-xi-bromo-7-[alpha]-12-[alpha]-diacetoxycholanic acid (m.p. 207-209[degree]C) [forward arrow] 3-keto-12-[alpha]-acetoxy- [DELTA]4,6-choladienic acid (m.p. 211-213[degree]C, absorption peak at 283 m[mu] in ethanol) [forward arrow] 3-keto-12-[alpha]-hydroxy-[DELTA]4,6-choladienic acid (m.p. 252-254[degree]C, apeak at 284.5 m[mu]. in ethanol) by heating in presence of KOH [forward arrow] 3,12-diketo-[DELTA] 4,6-choladienic acid (m.p. 206-208[degree]C, a peak at 281 m[mu]). The final product when dissolved in Nujol gives the absorption bands of C12-keto group at 5.87 and 5.79 [mu] together with those of [DELTA] 4,6-ketone group at 6.11, 6.23 and 6.34 [mu].
