PENETRANCE OF LOCAL ANESTHETICS

Abstract
The nerve penetration and recovery time of 4 new local anesthetic agents were compared with those of procaine in 64 cats of narrow wt. range. The Achilles tendon was attached to the arm of an isometric muscle level and the sciatic nerve exposed and stimulated by a simple square wave stimulator. After standardization, the agents to be tested were applied to the nerve in equiactive concns. Procaine, Lidocaine, and Ravocaine produced the same degree of blockade, Dibucaine a lesser degree, and WIN 3766 a greater degree of blockade at all concns. The time for complete recovery was in the order procaine, Lidocaine, Ravocaine, WIN 3766, Dibucaine. Recovery times ranged from 28 min. to over 6 hrs.
