Experimental Studies of the Effect of Coagulating Currents upon the Brain when Applied to the Intact Dura and Directly on the Cortex

Abstract
Changes produced in the brains of dogs and rabbits by a coagulating current were studied by the fluorescein method (examination of coagulated areas under fluorescent light after the injection of fluorescein). Histological studies were also made. Relatively mild applications of the coagulating current produce increased permeability of the vessels without demonstrable tissue damage. Coagulating current should be used sparingly on the central nervous system in human operations in view of its sustained effect on the blood-brain barrier.
