The Effects of Hemoglobin Solutions on Renal Functions in Man

Abstract
Solns. of hemoglobin containing dextrose, nicotinic acid and amide, ammonia, and hexose diphosphate increased the glomerular filtration rate in 1/3 of the cases, and decreased it in the others. There was a marked fall in the effective plasma flow, urinary output and sodium excretion in all cases. Although nephrotoxic, intraven. doses of 8-30 g. hemoglobin provoked no irreversible renal injury in 14 subjects with normal or elevated diastolic pressures and urine flows.
