The Effect of Sodium Fluoride on the Metabolism of Certain Mycobacteria

Abstract
NaF increases the O2 uptake of washed suspensions of BCG. The effect is greatest at pH 6, least at pH 7.8. At pH 6 the oxidation of lactate and pyruvate is greatly increased by fluoride, whereas that of sugars and fatty acids including acetate is inhibited. Growth at pH 6 is inhibited by fluoride and lactate increases this inhibition.
