Typing of ECHO Viruses by a Complement Fixation Technic

Abstract
The findings that complement-fixing (CF) antigens for ECHO viruses could be prepared consistently from monkey kidney tissue cultures and that these antigens reacted type specifically with ECHO antisera prepared in guinea pigs and monkeys, suggested the possibility of typing ECHO viruses isolated by means of a CF technique. Twenty-eight ECHO isolates which had previously been identified by neutralization tests were successfully typed by the technique described. These preliminary results indicated that the CF test may be a faster and less expensive technique for typing of ECHO viruses than is the neutralization test.
