Abstract
Experiments with rabbits and rats reveal that 17[alpha]-methyl-19-nortestosterone (I) is a potent oral progestational substance with some anabolic and relatively slight androgenic properties. I was able to maintain pregnancy in castrated rabbits and rats, but some damaging effect on the fetus was observed. Unlike progesterone however, I does not possess the relaxing effect upon the symphysis of the castrated guinea pig or effect the survival of adrenalectomised rats. In non-castrated rats a reduction in the weights of the prostate and seminal vesicles was seen. The toxicity of I was negligible. Keywords
