Phagocytic Potential of Leukaemic B-Lymphocytes

Abstract
Phagocytosis of small latex particles was demonstrated by light microscopy and EM in a proportion of cells from B[bone marrow derived]-lymphoproliferative disorders including chronic lymphocytic, prolymphocytic and hairy cell leukemia. It was not observed in a case of T[thymus-derived]-chronic lymphocytic leukemia or in normal human lymphocytes. A significant correlation was observed between the binding of latex to the lymphocyte surface and the degree of phagocytosis. Phagocytic activity of leukemic B-lymphocytes is mediated through their Fc receptor and this property may also be present in normal B-cells. Among mononuclear cells, phagocytosis can no longer be considered exclusively a property of monocytes.
