Nuclear orientation of175Yb in gold and silver

Abstract

¹⁷⁵Yb has been oriented in Au and Ag at very low temperature. From the measured anisotropy of the 283 keV gamma rays of Au¹⁷⁵Yb, the nuclear dipole moment of ¹⁷⁵Yb is deduced. The value found for this moment is much greater than the value quoted previously by Grace et al. However, it is shown that a reanalysis of their experimental data gives a result very similar to the authors. Also the electric quadrupole moment of this nucleus is deduced.
