DIABETIC ACIDOSIS: AN EVALUATION OF THE CAUSE, COURSE AND THERAPY OF 73 CASES

Abstract
The etiology, course and management of 73 cases of diabetic acidosis. The role of emotional disturbances, as well as infections, in precipitating the acidosis was stressed. Not one of the known diabetics had previously been in good control. The use of large doses of insulin was the most significant therapeutic measure. The use of hypotonic hydrating solutions circumvented many problems in electrolyte replacement. Routine use of indwelling catheters and "prophylactic" antibiotics are contra-indicated. In this series there were 4 deaths, all in individuals over age 65, who had other medical complications.
