Abstract
A uracil-fermenting bacterium was isolated, characterized and named Clostridium uracilicum. It carries out a mixed fermentation of glucose, producing CO2 , hydrogen, acetic, butyric, formic, lactic, and succinic acids and ethanol. C. uracilicum requires tryptophan, arginine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, aspartic acid, and biotin for growth. Uracil is converted quantitatively to beta-alanine, CO2 and ammonia.
