Degradation of 14C-Labelled Carolic and Carlosic Acids from Penicillium Charlesii G. Smith.

Abstract
From cultures of P. charlesii grown on glucose and C14-labeled acetate as an addnl. C source, labeled carlosic and carolic acids were isolated and procedures for their degradation detd. On the basis of observed isotopic distribution, their synthesis is proposed via a condensation between a high-labeled 6-C [BETA]-keto acid, derived directly from acetate by head-to-tail coupling, and a low-labeled 4-C member of the citric acid cycle, the latter being more dild. by unlabeled C from glucose during the incorporation of the acetate added.
