Acid Mucopolysaccharides in Normal Serum1

Abstract
Mucopolysaccharide which contains uronic acid can be demonstrated in euglobulin from normal serum following precipitation of most of the protein with perchloric acid, and then precipitation of the mucopolysaccharide with protamine. The fraction obtained contains two metachromatic components on paper chromatography, one migrating like chondroitin sulfate, the other like heparin. Both components are labile to testicular hyaluronidase. Sera from 34 normal adults had an average mucopolysaccharide level of 277 ug % measured as glucuronic acid by the carbazole method.
