Further studies on seminal ergothioneine of the pig

Abstract
A new, generally applicable method of isolating pure ergothioneine from biological material is described. DL-(S35) Methionine (5.5 mc) was administered to a mature pig; no radioactivity could be detected in the blood ergothioneine after 49 days or in the seminal ergothioneine up to 83 days after administration of the isotope. Under the feeding conditions of this experiment no biosynthesis or metabolic exchange of ergothioneine sulfur with other labeled body constituents took place. An unidentified sulfur compound which is oxidizable to sulfate by bromine water is present in pig semen.
