Abstract
The absolute gas‐phase infrared intensities for the triply degenerate vibrations of SnH4 and SnD4 are determined using the nitrogen pressure‐broadening technique. An analysis of the SnH4 intensities yields alternative sets for the dipole‐moment derivatives in terms of the symmetry coordinates of the F2 species: For ∂Pz/∂S3, Set I is ±2.81±0.14 D/Å and Set II is ±2.66±0.14 D/Å; for ∂Pz/∂S4, Set I is ±1.68±0.09 D/Å and Set II is ∓1.85±0.09 D/Å. A comparison with data for the other Group IV hydrides suggests a possible preference for Set I, the positive ratio for the relative sign combination of the stretching and bending dipole‐moment derivatives.
