Stimulating Effect of Vagotomy on Gastric Secretion in Heidenhain Pouch Dog

Abstract
Division of the vagus nerves above the diaphragm persistently increased gastric secretion from such Heidenhain pouches by as much as 7 times the original value. The increase was absent when the antrum had previously been removed or when a gastrojejunostomy had been performed. The increase in secretion in Heidenhain pouch dogs produced by vagotomy may be due to a lessening of acid inhibition of antrum f unction. Vagotomy should reduce the production of acid gastric juice in the main stomach pouch, and lessen the amt. of acid inhibition by the antrum. This conclusion is supported by the observation that resection of the fundus of the stomach in Heidenhain pouch dogs produced a similar marked increase in gastric secretion from the pouch.
