THE SECRETION OF CORTISOL AND CORTICOSTERONE BY THE HUMAN ADRENAL CORTEX

Abstract
The cortisol/corticosterone ratio was investigated in the adrenal venous blood of women undergoing 2-stage adrenalectomy for metastatic mammary carcinoma with special reference to the effects of corticotropin (ACTH). Higher values of 3.0 or over were found in patients given ACTH before operation and lower ratios of 2.3 or less were found in the controls. The proportion of cortisol and corticosterone secreted varies according to the state of the adrenal cortex at the time of examination. The variable results were discussed in relation to the histological appearance of the gland.
