Abstract

Preparation of sphingosine from pig brain is descr. and its coagulation-inhibiting effect on chicken plasma demonstrated. Various thrombokinases diminished, and lipoid activator abolished, the effect. Pure sphingosine is said to show no inhibiting effect. When sphingosine is combined with lipoid activator and chicken plasma, clotting time is shorter with longer incubation of sphingosine with the plasma before the activator is added. At the longest intervals, clotting time is shorter than with activator alone. This phenomenon is termed "incubation effect" and is discussed in the light of the hypothesis of Overman.
