Abstract
The author gives a short historical sketch of the condition of pseudocyesis or simulated pregnancy. Cases have been reported since the time of Hippocrates, and the frequency of occurrence has decreased in recent times. The clinical picture in pseudocyesis is first considered. There is next a review of the exptl. work done in the animal field on this topic and a discussion of the means by which false pregnancy has been brought about. These include infertile coitus, mechanical and electrical stimulation of the cervical canal, electrical stimulation of the head, and chemical treatment of the nasal mucosa. The author briefly presents 5 new cases to the literature, and gives a fuller account of a 6th patient who was studied psychologically.
