Effect of deuteron breakup on (d, p) cross sections

Abstract
Deuteron-nucleus breakup wave functions, obtained in a previous study, are applied to calculate the contribution of breakup to zero range stripping matrix elements for the case of 21.6 MeV deuterons incident on Ca40. The results are compared with the method of Johnson and Soper. The two calculations agree quite well, but the Johnson-Soper method slightly overestimates the effect of breakup for the surface partial waves, and it suppresses too much the stripping amplitudes for the interior partial waves.
